Fate and effects of xanthates in laboratory freshwater systems.

چکیده
Xanthates (salts of the dithiocarbon acid-O-ester with ~ a C-O-alkyl or aryl chain and C-S-metal ion) are mostly of technical s[gnificance as "samplers" of metal sul[ides in mining flotation. Alkali-metal-xanthates are stable, crystalline substances. The Na-salts are slightly hygroscopic and form dihydrates, while the Ksalts crystallize free of water. More than ii 000 metric tons of Na-isopropyl (49 %), Na-ethyl-(30 %), Nasec. butyl-(15 %) and K-isopentyl-xanthates (i0 %) are consumed in flotation processes per year worldwide. Alkali-xanthates are of mlnor toxicity to mammals (LD50 for mice ranged from 400-700 mg/kg; Edelmann 1983). As Xanthates are hydrolyzed by stomach acid, poisoning is mainly caused by the hydrolysis products alcohol and carbon disulfide. Xanthates, however, are known to be strong fish poisons (Edelmann 1983; Webb et al. 1976). LD50 values were round between i0 and i00 mg/L water. Recently xanthates are being discussed as helpful agents in environmental protection because of their ability to remove harmful heavy metals from contaminated waters (Edelmann 1983). The present work was undertaken, to provide more information on the rate and effects on aquatic organisms of these environmental chemicals.

Selective mechanism-based inactivation of cytochromes P-450 2B1 and P-450 2B6 by a series of xanthates.
Fifteen xanthates with carbon chains of different lengths or substitutions, including the antiviral compound D609 (O-tricyclo[5.2. 1.0(2,6)]dec-9-yl-dithiocarbonate), were tested for their ability to inactivate cytochromes P-450 (P-450s) 2B1 and 2B6. All of the xanthates tested were found to inactivate P-450 2B1 in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. The rates of inactivation at 30 degr...
متن کاملEffects of zinc oxide nanoparticles and zinc ions on intestine histopathology of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles and ions on intestinal tissue histopathology of freshwater crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) under laboratory conditions. We evaluated two concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles and zinc ions (0.5 µm/l and 1.0 mg/l) with a control group. After 14 days of exposure to the nanoparticles of zinc oxide and zinc ions...
متن کاملLaboratory investigation of water extraction effects on saltwater wedge displacement
There is a close connection between saltwater intrusion into aquifers and groundwater extraction. Freshwater extraction in coastal aquifers is one of the most important reasons for the saltwater intrusion into these aquifers. Condition of extraction system such as well depth, discharge rate, saltwater concentration and etc. could affect this process widely. Thus, investigating different extract...

In this study, the effect of the color of the bedding of cultivating aquariums (white, black, green, blue) on growth performance, nutrition and biochemical composition of the body of large freshwater shrimp (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) post larvae was investigated. All laboratory and experimental stages of this study were carried out in the fall of 1397 and for 60 days in an ornamental fish plan...
متن کاملThe importance of sound effect assessment in the Iranian freshwater endemic fishes
Endemic fishes are part of the genetic resources in aquatic habitats. The Caspian Sea, as the largest lake in the world, has a unique habitat diversity and is of great importance for the countries of the region. Over the recent decades, with the increase in the level of anthropogenic sound, its effects on freshwater and marine fishes have been considered by fisheries managers and stakeholders. ...
